If you mention “secret weapon” in sports like football, you probably think of a massive lineman or a skill player who has game breaking speed that can change the game at the drop of a dime. However, this weapon is different. He does have game changing ability: his foot. Senior kicker James Cordova can literally change the direction of the Chieftain’s season. The much improved team in 2017 will need him if they are to navigate through 2A Region 1 in search of a playoff birth, or perhaps a title. Cordova has spent the summer working on his place kicking craft, attending kicking camps in Louisiana and UAB, competing against some of the region’s top kickers. Along with the important place kicking duties in which he will kickoff and handle all of the PATs, he’s being called on by coach John Beverly to handle punts as well. Cordova projects as a kicker at the next level if he can prove he’s consistent and accurate. He has kicked over 40 this summer from the grass, which is what NCAA kickers currently kick from. With the 1 inch tee that is customary in high school, he has kicked a 53-yarder while camping at UAB this summer. It’s a safe bet that Cordova will have a huge impact on Chickasaw Football this season. The Cheiftains kickoff the regular season at home against McIntosh on August 25 at 7pm.
