If you were present for Chickasaw’s home opener against McIntosh you may have experienced a “blackout”. The Chieftains scored early & often as they lead 28-0 after the first quarter. Then came the blackout. Lights went out in and around Dotson Park early in the second quarter for nearly 30 minutes. When play resumed, Chickasaw picked up where they left off by dominating McIntosh in knock out fashion. McIntosh managed to get on the board in the third quarter. By quarter’s end, the Chieftains pulled mostly every starter and played reserves with much of the same results. AJ Phillips, who’s up for this week’s Coastal Alabama Player of the Week, rushed for 139 yards on just 9 carries, scored 3 times. He completed 3-4 passes for 55 yards and a score. A host of other Chieftain players rushed for TD’s including 2 from sophomore Ty Cox and 1 each from Trey Evans, Trent White-Jones, Fountaine Green, and Xavier Lester. The defense was just as dominant as the offense. It must be noted that any hopes of a successful playoff run will depend heavily on this experienced unit. 2019 prospect Paul Lewis lead the team in tackles with 8, 5 of them solo. He was followed by Xavier Lester with 7, Fountaine Green 6, DL Xavier Wilson had 6, and 4 year starter Dorian Jones had 5. Special teams were up and down and a point of concern as kicker James Cordova connected on 4-4 extra points but failed to get several others off due to break downs up front.
All attention shifts now to 6A Williamson as the Chieftains get a stiff tune-up before region play. Williamson is coming off of a 16-7 win over LeFlore. Chickasaw will host the Lions at Dotson Park on Friday September 1 at 7pm.
