Chieftains News · #2 Cottage Hill slips by #7 Chickasaw 63-61

Cottage Hill (11-1) entered the game fresh off of an impressive showing, winning the Christmas Tournament at UMS-Wright. Chickasaw (7-1) entered the game fresh off of a ………………………………………………. wait for it……………………………….. 3 week shutdown due to Covid-19. No games. No practice. It looked like the Warriors would run away with the game, building a 30-15 halftime lead. CHCA’s Trent & Tyler Thomas controlled the boards on both ends of the floor & lead the offensive charge by knocking down several three-pointers. The Chieftains were being outplayed and simply out of sync. But there are always two halves in a basketball game. A smothering defense helped the Chieftains outscore the Warriors 25-13 in the third quarter. The fourth quarter was a battle of two very good 3A teams. The momentum had swung to the home team. A barrage of three pointers by Haaziq Loftin, Jr coupled with Baryle Davenport & Allister Dixon II’s resurgence gave the Chieftains a 1 point lead twice during the final 2 minutes of the game. But the Warrior made timely big shots and fought off a furious rally to defeat the Chieftains 61-61 on the road. CHCA was lead by Josh Bell’s 18 points. Tyler Thomas followed with 16 points. Kelvin McBride and Trent Thomas scored 12 & 10 points respectively. Haaziq Loftin, Jr lead all scorer’s with a creer high 28 points. He was followed by Demarion Hicks with 10, Allister Dixon II 9, and Baryle Davenport 8. The Chieftains 7-2 (0-1) head to Bayside while CHCA plays rival Mobile Christian on Friday.
